In Loving Memory of Armando "Mando" Lopez Armando Lopez, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, educator, and dedicated community member, ascended to heaven on July 23, 2023, at the age of 72, after a courageous battle with pancreatic and liver cancer. Born on August 9th, 1950, in his cherished hometown of Mercedes, TX, Armando was the loving son of Antonio and Manuela Lopez. Throughout his life, Armando embraced knowledge and academic pursuits. After graduating from Mercedes ISD class of 1968, he pursued his passion for mathematics and earned his Bachelor's degree from Pan American University in 1973. His love for learning did not stop there, as he went on to earn a Master's in Geography from Western Michigan University in 1978. Armando's impact on the community was immeasurable. He touched countless lives as a dedicated math teacher for 28 years in the San Benito & Mercedes ISD. His enthusiasm for education and commitment to his students earned him the admiration of all who knew him. Beyond the classroom, Armando also served his community and city with unwavering dedication. As Mercedes City Commissioner, he selflessly devoted his time and energy from 1997 to 2004 and again from 2014 to 2017, striving to make a positive difference in the lives of those he served. A devout member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Armando found solace and inspiration in his faith. He held a deep love for his church, community, school district, and country, and his enthusiasm for service inspired others to follow in his footsteps. Armando's warm and loving nature extended to his family, who meant the world to him. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Marisela, who was his constant support and a pillar of strength throughout his life. He was a loving and devoted father to his four children, Jessica, Jovanna, Jovette, and Armando Jr. His heart swelled with pride and joy at the sight of his six grandchildren. In addition to his immediate family, Armando is survived by his sister, Estella Singleterry, and her husband, Lupe Singleterry, as well as his nephews and nieces, Joe, Andrew, Sandra, and Lisa. His love, guidance, and presence in their lives will be sorely missed. To celebrate the life of this remarkable man, Armando's family will be hosting a viewing on Tuesday, July 25, 2023, from 11:00 am to 8:00 pm, with a Rosary at 6:00 pm. The funeral service will follow on Wednesday, July 26, 2023, at Rudy Garza Funeral Home for a departure at 9:30 am to Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church for a 10:00 am Mass, followed by his final resting place at Highland Memorial Park in Weslaco, Texas. As we mourn the loss of Armando Lopez, let us also cherish the memories of the kind-hearted, generous, and devoted man who touched the lives of so many. May his legacy of love, service, and passion for education inspire us to make a difference in our communities, just as he did throughout his life.
