Cruz Lopez

Rio Hondo - Cruz Lopez, 98 of Rio Hondo, Texas went home to be with her Lord on May 28, 2016. She was born on May 20, 1918 in Rancho Verde to the late Hilario and Melquiades Lugo. On April 2, 1939 she married Manuel P. Lopez in Rancho Verde and remained his partner for 51 years.Together they raised 14 children in Rio Hondo, Texas. She taught her children the value of creativity and resourcefulness. She was the family's expert in sewing, floral arrangements, gardening, reusing, cooking, and herbs for healing. She taught the necessity of compassion and faith. As a family every celebration, holiday and moment of solidarity was spent together. She was a hands-on and energetic mother and grandmother. Cruz was a devoted member of St Helen's Catholic Church and was well loved and known by many within the Rio Hondo community. Those Cruz leaves behind to cherish her memory include her children Roberto (Delia) Morado, Julia Torres, Esther (Dan) Hernandez, son-in-law Trinidad Calderon, Lucy (Theodoro) Olvera, Mary Lou (Carlos) Ponce; Rene (Nora) Lopez, Leticia (Andrew) Sparks along with 50 grandchildren, numerous great-grandchildren, and several great-great grandchildren. Cruz is reunited in Heaven with her husband Manuel P. Lopez, her parents and her daughters, Lydia Calderon, Hortencia "Tencha" Garcia, Olivia Green, and Herlinda Martinez and sons, Manuel Lopez, Roberto Lopez, and Rodolfo Lopez. Visitation will begin Sunday, May 29, 2016 between the hours of 12:00 PM and 9:00 PM and a holy rosary will be at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be on Monday, May 30, 2016 departing the Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 8:30 AM for a 9:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Helen's Catholic Church in Rio Hondo and interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery. Special thanks to Sonia Martinez and Belinda Lopez-Boykin for their compassionate care. We would also like to thank Gentiva Hospice, Dr. Rolando Posada, third floor medical at Harlingen Medical Center and Father Rigobert Mot, Father Andy Gutierrez, and Father Felix Cazarez. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in honor of Cruz Lopez to St Helen's Catholic Church. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home.
