Elva Martinez

Elva Martinez, 80, a lifetime resident of Mercedes Texas peacefully answered the Lord's call, surrounded by her Loving family. She was born July 19, 1945, to Leopoldo and Lilia Lopez Diaz in Weslaco, Texas. She is survived by her family, husband: Heriberto Martinez., Daughter: Dr. Lora (Daniel) Perez, Son: Heriberto (Mayra) Martinez Jr., 6 grandchildren: Shanelle (Pavel) Pishchanetskiy, Herbie Martinez, Adrian Martinez, Briana Martinez, DJ Perez, Matthew Perez, 3 great-grandchildren: Nicholas A. Pishchanetskiy, Elijah Pishchanetskiy, Katya Pishchanetskiy and one sister: Oralia (Ricardo) Caballero. She is also preceded in death by her parents, two brothers: Guadalupe Diaz, Ramon Diaz and one sister: Adela Diaz. With unwavering faith, she entered paradise into the glorious and loving arms of her Savior. Elva was a true warrior, facing every health challenge with incredible courage and grace. Her journey was marked by a resilience that inspired all who knew her. In 2009, she triumphed over brain surgery to remove a large tumor, resulting in years of debilitating headaches and seizures. She was diagnosed with stage-four metastatic thyroid cancer in 2012, a battle she would fight for the rest of her life and still her spirit never wavered. Through it all, her profound love for Jesus gave her the unshakeable confidence that she could overcome any hurdle placed in her path. After a near-death experience in 2016 due to a pulmonary embolism, Elva viewed every day as a gift. She was deeply grateful for the extra time that the Lord granted her, which she filled with joy and love of her family. Her greatest treasures were seeing her children succeed and watching her grandchildren grow up in a warm and loving home. Ultimately, a stomach infection and other complications became too much for her frail and tired body to overcome. Elva’s journey on earth has ended, but she walked forward with full confidence, knowing she would finally meet her beloved Jesus and be reunited with her family who had gone before her. Visitation will be held on Sunday, October 12, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with a rosary at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, October 13, 2025. We will depart Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace at 9:30 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. mass at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church with interment to follow at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery in Weslaco, Texas. Funeral arrangements are under the direction and care of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Mercedes, Texas.
