Irene Uresti Martinez

It is with great sadness that we announce Irene Martinez, beloved daughter, sister, wife, mother, and friend, was called home by her Lord and Savior on March 31, 2024, at the age of 53, after a valiant battle with breast cancer. Irene was born on January 10, 1971 in Weslaco, then moved to Harlingen with her family when she was 4 years old. She was the younger daughter of David and Nena Uresti, and shared her childhood days with her cherished, older sister Debbie. From the moment she entered the world, Irene's fiery spirit and zest for life were evident to all who knew her. After graduating from Harlingen High School in 1989, Irene attended Texas State Technical Institute and earned her degree in Health Information Management. She then embarked on a career that spanned over three decades working in various hospitals and healthcare facilities in medical records, ultimately becoming the Director of Information Management at Christus Spohn Health System in Corpus Christi. Her peers describe her as a “faithful extension of the gentle healing ministry of Jesus Christ. Her smile, drive, and unwavering faith were an inspiration to those she touched and led. She was a great leader and mentor and always made everyone feel special”. Outside of her professional life, Irene found her greatest joy in her roles as a devoted wife and loving mother. She married the love of her life, Pete Martinez, and together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and cherished memories. They were blessed with two children, Peter and Lauren, whom Irene adored beyond measure. She treasured her children and embraced every moment with them. Her compassion extended beyond her family; she was mom to many, always opening her home and her heart to anybody in need. In 2021, Irene's life took an unexpected turn when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite the daunting challenges that lay ahead, Irene faced her diagnosis with unwavering courage and determination. Throughout her journey, she remained hopeful and filled with faith. She was an inspiration to all who knew her, refusing to let the disease define her. Irene leaves behind her legacy of love, strength, and resilience. Her ultimate joy in life was being surrounded by her friends and family. We will never forget her huge heart, her contagious laugh, and her sassy nature. She is survived by her devoted husband, Pete; her loving children, Peter and Lauren; her mother Nena Uresti; her sister and brother-in-law, Debbie and Rey Ysaguirre, her cherished nieces and nephews, and many relatives and friends who will miss her dearly. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 7, 2024 at Rudy Garza Funeral Home. A private family viewing will be held from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. followed by a public viewing from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., with the holy rosary to be prayed at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 8, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at Queen of Peace church in Harlingen with interment to follow at Monte Meta Cemetery in San Benito, Texas. Funeral services are under the direction and care of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen, Texas.
