Isabel M. Sosa

SAN BENITO, TX. - Isabel M. Sosa, also known to his family and friends as "Chavelo", 90, of San Benito, Texas, passed away on Friday, January 17, 2014 after a two year-long battle with lung cancer. Born in Sweetwater, Texas on November 19, 1923, he was the son of the late Eulogio and Aurora Sosa. Chavelo was raised in San Benito and was a WWII veteran, after proudly serving his country for many years. He was Commander of the GI Forum of San Benito for 22 years. Growing up surrounded by agriculture, later farming in San Benito and other RGV areas, Chavelo participated in the US/Mexico Agricultural Brazero Program in the late 1940's and 1950's. In 1970, seeing the opportunity to be self-employed and to go back into agriculture, he contracted with several farms in Michigan, Indiana, and Ohio, harvesting produce. In 1977, he established Sosa's Backhoe Service in San Benito, where he retired from. Chavelo was a Pastor, Deacon, and Director of Bible Studies for various churches in San Benito. He was preceded in death by his brothers Pablo Sosa and Antonio Sosa; his sisters Maria Alvarado and Angelita Lopez; his son Alfredo "Freddy" Sosa; his granddaughter Erica Sosa; and his grandson Daniel Angel Villarreal. Chavelo is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Olga Rodriguez Sosa; a brother Isidro (Eloisa) Sosa of San Benito; his daughters Irma Salazar, Ruth Gonzalez (Dr. Joe F.) Cherry of San Benito, Hilda (Ruben) Villarreal of San Benito, Olga Estrada of North Carolina, Elvia Villela of San Benito, Diana (Frank) Brtek of La Feria; his sons Antonio Sosa of San Benito and Jose Isabel (Cynthia) Sosa of San Benito; his daughter-in-law Petra Sosa; his 26 grandchildren Belinda Sosa, Alfredo Sosa, Elizabeth Sosa, Lyzandra Salazar (Mauricio) Gonzalez, Irma "Jeanne" Yzaquirre, Robert Salazar, Ricardo Gonzalez Jr., Regina Gonzalez, Arnold Sanchez Jr., Samuel Sanchez, Faustino Ochoa a.k.a. Jereme, Shelley Christie (Gabriel) Araujo, Robert Sosa, Angel Sosa, Pearl Sosa, Daniel Sosa, Narcisco "Trey" (Valerie) Villela, Eric (Mari) Villela, Christopher Villela, Jason Sosa, Jose "Joey" (Melly) Sosa, Latanya Sosa, Eduardo (Katrina) Gonzalez, Vanessa Gonzalez, Alejandro Gonzalez, and Dominic Ramos. Chavelo is also survived by his loving 35 great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held today, Sunday, January 19, 2014 between the hours of 1:00 PM and 9:00 P.M., and 9:00 AM - 9:00 PM, Monday, January 20, 2014 with a prayer service scheduled for 7:00 PM Monday evening. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2014, at 10:00 A.M. in the Rudy Garza Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park in San Benito, Texas.
