Maria Juanita Luna

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved sister, Maria J. Luna, & quote ;Janie”, who left us peacefully on December 29, 2024, at the age of 68. She was a beacon of love and warmth in our lives, cherished by all who knew her. Born on June 3, 1956, in San Juan, Texas, to Juan and Flora Hinojosa. Janie graduated from PSJA ISD in 1974, and she went on to earn her bachelor's degree from The University of Texas-Pan American. She was known for her caring nature and ability to make anyone feel special. Renowned for her passion for cooking, she brought joy to countless family gatherings and was known for her delicious meals, whether it was her famous family recipe or experimenting with new dishes. Her kitchen and yours if you allowed her were filled with delicious aromas and laughter. Janie is survived by her siblings, Armando Hinojosa, Julie (Ruben) Martinez, and Javier (Linda) Hinojosa, stepdaughter Jessica Cooper, and 2 grandchildren, Emily and Julisa, as well as her loyal canine companions, Fideo and Tiger. She also leaves behind her nieces and nephews whom she cherished greatly. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jesse, her parents Juan and Flora Hinojosa. Janie loved Jesse unconditionally. She found comfort in the memories they created. Her love for him remained strong until her last day. She often spoke of their adventures together, highlighting the happiness they shared. Janie was a woman of strength, love, and unwavering perseverance. She enjoyed shopping and had a profound love for reading. Her vibrant spirit and caring nature touched the lives of many who were fortunate enough to know her. She leaves behind a legacy of love, kindness and culinary delight. She will be deeply missed by her family and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her legacy will live in the hearts forever. Visitation service, Sunday, January 5, 2025, Rudy Garza Funeral Home, 236 Ohio Ave., Mercedes, Texas from 3:00 – 9:00. A Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 6, 2025 departing the Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 9:30 am proceeding to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 920 Anaquitas St., Mercedes, Texas at 10:00 am. Following the service, a burial will take place at Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery, 21037 Godwin Road, Harlingen, Texas . Friends and family are invited to join in celebrating Janie’s life and sharing their cherished memories. All services are under the direction and care of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Mercedes, Texas.
