Maria de Jesus Torres

We announce the passing of our beloved mother, Maria (Mary) De Jesus Torres, who has been called to eternal rest in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on December 19th, 2024. A lifelong resident of Mercedes, Mary was born on March 9th, 1956 to Casimiro and Maria Luz Martinez. Mary graduated from Mercedes High School in 1976. Shortly after, she met her dear husband, Eduardo (Coach Eddie) Torres, and together they created a life together in Mercedes for 44 years, 11 months, and 19 days. Mary attended Pan Am University and graduated with her Bachelors of Science degree in Physical Education. The first part of Mary’s career was spent as a physical education coach at Taylor Elementary in Mercedes ISD, where she inspired and nurtured the growth of countless students. While raising her 3 children, Mary continued her education by pursuing her masters degree in counseling. Mary worked for a short time as a counselor at Progreso ISD before spending the remainder of her career at PSJA ISD, where she touched the lives of many children and formed lasting friendships. She is preceded in death by her parents, Casimiro and Maria Luz Martinez. She is survived by her husband, Eduardo Torres, her three children, Tony (Mariana) Torres, Melissa Denise Torres, and Holly Kimberly McCutcheon (Richard), five grandchildren, Julianna Bianca Torres, Evan Josiah Torres, Robert Samuel Torres, Scarlett Reagan Mendez, and Harrison James McCutcheon; siblings, Maria Olga (Todd) Simonsen, Elvia (Rolando) Vasquez, Aida (Gilbert) Chapa, Hortencia Martinez, Yolanda (late husband Amado) Martinez, Javier (Thelma) Martinez, and Casimiro (Jennifer) Martinez, as well as many nieces and nephews. Mary was a woman of timeless beauty and grace, carrying herself with elegance and class in everything she did. Mary truly touched the lives of many everywhere she went. She lived a life of selflessness, always putting the needs of others before her own and giving generously of herself to those she loved. Mary’s greatest joy in life was her grandchildren, for whom she lived with love, devotion, and unwavering support. Her strength was truly admirable, as she faced life's challenges with unwavering determination and grace until her very last day. The Torres family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Dr. Lee, Dr. Morris,Tiffany, and Tanya for their excellent care, always keeping her wishes in mind and providing the best possible care with compassion and dedication. Visitation will be held on Thursday, December 26, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a Rosary at 7:00 PM at the Rudy Garza Funeral Home Chapel of Peace in Mercedes, Texas. The funeral service will take place on Friday, December 27, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church in Mercedes, Texas, followed by a burial at Mercedes Memorial Restlawn Cemetery. Mary is and will forever be missed and loved by all the hearts she touched. Her memory will live on through her husband, children, and grandchildren. All services are under the direction and care of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Mercedes, Texas.
