ODILIA B. CAVAZOS

Odilia B. Cavazos, 75, entered into eternal rest on March 11, 2016, at Valley Baptist Medical Center in Harlingen, TX, surrounded by her loving family. Odilia was born on October 9, 1940, in Mercedes, TX, to Cayetano “C.A.” and Virginia Briseno. She graduated from Mercedes High School in 1959, and continued to pursue her education at the Pan American College in Edinburg, Texas, and at Texas A&I University at Kingsville where she earned a Master’s Degree in Bilingual Education. Odilia proudly served the Mercedes ISD School District for over 30 years as a teacher, facilitator, and Assistant Principal. She also was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church and the Pan America Roundtable. She is preceded in death by her husband of 39 years Alfonso Cavazos, her parents Cayetano and Virginia Briseno, and her step-sister; Dora Mae Hernandez. She is survived by her husband of 6 years Adan Cavazos; children Isaac Joseph (Rosie ) Cavazos of Tilden, Michael (Norma) Cavazos of McAllen, Nelda (Aniceto) Alonzo of Harlingen, and Alfonso (Melissa) Cavazos, Jr. of Mercedes; step-child Cindy (Mike) Dunn of Arkansas; grandchildren Joaquin, Sarita, Shaina, Michael, Javier, Ernie, Joseph, Kaitlyn, Alfonso III “Trey”, Alissa, Mason, and Parker. She is also survived by her brother Roland (Jill) Briseno of McAllen, and numerous nieces and nephews. Odilia was a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, sister-in-law, aunt, and friend. She loved to travel, enjoy delicious food, and spend time with her family. Her biggest joy was cheering on her grandchildren at all of their extracurricular activities, and inspiring them to reach their educational goals. Honored to serve as pallbearers will be her sons, Isaac, Michael and Alfonso; and grandsons, Javier, Joseph, and Joaquin. Visitation will be held at Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Mercedes on Monday, March 14, 2016, from 1:00pm to 9:00pm, with a Holy Rosary to be recited at 7:00pm. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, March 15, 2016, at 10:00am at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Highland Memorial Park Cemetery.
