Omar Aparicio

With hearts both heavy with sorrow and full of gratitude for the time we were given, we announce the passing of Omar Aparicio, who passed peacefully on Feb. 24, 2025 surrounded by the family who loved and adored him. Omar, 78, was born in Mercedes, Texas on Nov. 6, 1946 to Luis and Paula Aparicio. In 1964, while still in high school, he answered the call to serve his country, joining the United States Navy, where he built a foundation of discipline, resilience, and a love for the open water that would stay with him for the rest of his days. He rose to the rank of Machinery Repairman Petty Officer 3rd Class, and even had the chance to explore the world on his Mediterranean Tour after serving in Vietnam. He graduated from Mercedes High School in 1966, and then in 1967, fate led him to meet the love of his life, Alicia Escobedo, from Harlingen. They married on Dec. 27, 1968, and continued their life together for over five decades. At the conclusion of his naval service, Omar spent his career as a machinist and an engineer, working at Schlumberger in Houston for 17 years, then at Pratt and Whitney in East Hartford, CT for 7 years until he moved back to the Rio Grande Valley where he worked at Anderson Greenwood in Harlingen and later at Mueller in Brownsville until his retirement. Remembered for his quiet strength, deep wisdom, and an unmatched sense of humor, he delighted in the simple pleasures of life like his love for fishing and a glass of red wine. Always the jokester among his friends and family, Omar’s playful spirit and genuine love for watching movies will forever remain with those who knew him. But above all else, he was a family man. A devoted husband, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and uncle. He built a legacy of love that will echo for generations. His family was his proudest accomplishment, and through them, his spirit will never fade. His laughter will live on in our gatherings, his wisdom in the lessons he imparted, and his love in the countless memories we hold dear. Omar is survived by his wife, Alicia Aparicio; his loving daughters, Veronica (Chris) Varner and Yvette (Lorenzo) Olivarez; his brother, Rudolfo “Popo” (Diana) Aparicio; his sister, Erendira “Chuqui” (Charles) Stevens. He also leaves behind 6 grandchildren, Shane (Stacey) Scallan, Nicole (Ryan Samii) Scallan, Anthony (Amy) Aparicio-Scallan, Austin Olivarez, Cameron Olivarez, Celeste Olivarez, and a great-granddaughter, Avery Rae Scallan. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Romel and Jaime, his mother, Paula Vera, and his father, Luis Aparicio. A celebration of Omar’s remarkable life and military honors will be held at Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen, Texas on Mar. 8, 2025 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you raise a glass of red wine in his honor and share a story that makes you laugh. That’s how he would have wanted it.
