Sylvia Evis Garza Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Sylvia Evis Garza, 62, entered the Lord’s Kingdom on July 2, 2025. She was born on July 23, 1962, in Harlingen, Texas, to Israel and Petra Cano. Sylvia devoted her life to her faith, her calling as an educator, and the love of her family. She proudly served as a teacher for over 30 years at First Baptist Church of Brownsville, Burns Elementary, Gallegos Elementary, and Crockett Elementary in Harlingen, touching the lives of countless students and colleagues. A devoted and active member of Primera Iglesia Bautista, Sylvia held various leadership roles, including Children’s Church Director and Sunday School Director, and served on multiple church committees. Despite physical challenges, she remained steadfast in her faith, and the Lord inspired one of her most meaningful ministries, “Monday Message.” Each week, without fail, she shared a Bible verse and a note of encouragement with friends and loved ones, reminding them they were loved, prayed for, and never alone. Sylvia had a gift for listening, a warm laugh that could fill a room, and a joyful spirit that lifted those around her. She had a quick wit, a sharp sense of humor, and was a natural storyteller—often becoming the heart of any gathering she attended. Her presence was unforgettable, and her ability to make others smile was unmatched. Her greatest joy in life was her family. Sylvia was a devoted wife, a loving daughter, a proud and supportive mother, a caring sister, and a joyful grandmother. She would do anything for those she loved and was always there with open arms, a kind word, and a heart full of grace. She is survived by her loving husband of 27 years, Sabas Garza III; her mother, Petra R. Cano; her children, Jose Alfredo (Dulce) Rodriguez Jr., Sarah Alyssa Rodriguez, Cynthia Evis (Raul) Gutierrez, Sabas Garza IV, and Jose Israel Garza; her grandchildren, Aaleyah and Amelia Rodriguez, David and Diego Gutierrez, Alyssa, Austin, and Ann Jolie Garza; and her grandpup, Zeke. She is also survived by her only brother, Israel (Ana) Cano III, and nephews, Israel IV and David Cano; and by many aunts, uncles and cousins, extended family members and friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Israel Cano Jr. Visitation will be held at Rudy Garza Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 8, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with a prayer service at 7:00 PM, led by Pastor Roberto Rodriguez of Primera Iglesia Bautista. Funeral services will begin on Wednesday, July 9, 2025, at 10:00 AM at the funeral home, followed by burial at Mont Meta Cemetery. Sylvia’s legacy of faith, compassion, and love will continue to live on through the many lives she touched. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
