Zulema R. Gonzalez

Zulema R. Gonzalez entered the gates of heaven on December 5, 2024 at the age of 94. Born in Kingsville, Texas, on May 1, 1930, to Guadalupe and Rebecca Reyes, she was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend to all who knew her. She is now reunited with her loving husband of 54 years, Gonzalo Gonzalez, as well as her siblings Rene Reyes, Yolanda Gonzalez and Ovidia Garcia, and her grandsons Brian Gonzalez and Jonavin Lino Escamilla, all of whom preceded her in death. Zulema leaves behind a legacy of love and devotion to her family, including her surviving siblings, Teodoro (Terry) Reyes, Noelia Martinez and Thelma Reyes; her children, Gonzalo (Elma) Gonzalez, David (Aida) Gonzalez, Velma Torres, Bobby Gonzalez, Xavier (Samantha) Gonzalez, Anna Lisa Escamilla and David (Lindsey) Garza; her grandchildren, Melissa Johnson, Erik Gonzalez, Julie Gonzalez, David Michael Gonzalez, Brianna Torres, Dominik Torres, Bobby James Bentley, Xavier Gonzalez, Andrew Gonzalez, Liliana Gonzalez, Ashley Boerner, Justin Escamilla and Lauren Escamilla; her great-grandchildren, Haylee Johnson, Bella Gonzalez, David Gonzalez, Victoria Gonzalez, Ethan Gonzalez, Roland Gonzalez, Easton Bentley, Blythe Blood, Jameson Gonzalez, Memphis Gonzalez, Beckham Boerner, Bennett Boerner, John Luke Escamilla, Kaila Zepeda, Alise Garza, Jordin Garza and Peyton Garza; and her great-great-grandchild: Ezra Ruiz, all of whom were her pride and joy. Known affectionately as “Grandma Tiki Tiki,” Zulema was a talented ceramist. Her nurturing spirit extended beyond her family as she enjoyed caring for her plants, playing bingo at The Bingo Ranch, going to the casinos and spending summers on South Padre Island. She also enjoyed watching her favorite novelas and Law and Order SVU. A devout Catholic, Zulema was an active and cherished member of St. Anthony’s Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and as a charter member of the Catholic Daughters of America Court. Visitation will be held on Monday, December 9, 2024 from 1 to 9 p.m., with a rosary prayed at 7 p.m. at Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen, Texas. The funeral service will take place on Tuesday, December 10, 2024, with the procession departing the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. for a 10 a.m. service at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Harlingen. Zulema will be laid to rest beside her husband at Santa Gertrudis Memorial Cemetery in Kingsville, Texas. Pallbearers will be Chris Boerner, Justin Escamilla, Xavier Gonzalez, Andrew Gonzalez, Ethan Gonzalez and Roland Gonzalez. Honorary pallbearers will be Dominik Torres, David Gonzalez, John Luke Escamilla, Beckham Boerner and Bennett Boerner. Zulema’s memory will forever live on in the hearts of her family and all who knew her.
