It is with heavy hearts and profound love that we announce the passing of Albert Cavazos, beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, and friend, who departed this life on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in Harlingen, Texas, at the age of 78. Albert was born on September 30, 1946, in Edcouch, Texas. He spent his life devoted to his family, his country, and his community. A proud American and a man of deep conviction, Albert answered the call to serve and enlisted in the United States Army, where he courageously fought in the Vietnam War. During his time in combat, he was wounded in action, a sacrifice he bore with strength and quiet dignity for the rest of his life. His service left a permanent imprint not only on his own life but on the many lives he touched thereafter. Upon returning home, Albert remained dedicated to serving others, particularly his fellow veterans. He became a powerful and respected voice in the community as the 15th District Commander for the American Legion, where he worked tirelessly for over 40 years to advocate for veterans’ rights and ensure that the sacrifices of his comrades were never forgotten. His leadership was marked by integrity, compassion, and an unwavering commitment to justice. Albert was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Maria Rosa Cavazos, the love of his life and his cherished dance partner. Together, they brought joy to many Saturday nights at the American Legion and VFW halls, where they shared their love for music, dancing, and fellowship with their veteran family. Their bond was unbreakable, and their love story lives on in the memories of all who witnessed it. Above all, Albert was a family man. He took immense pride in his role as a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his children: Katherine (Jose “Paco”) Bedartes, Michael (Stephanie) Cavazos, and Adrian (Maxine) Cavazos. His legacy continues through his 13 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, all of whom were the light of his life. Albert made every effort to be present at every birthday, every holiday, and every family gathering. His laughter, stories, and warmth filled the room whenever he was near. Time with family was his most treasured gift. Albert’s life was one of service, love, and community. Whether marching for veterans’ rights, leading local initiatives, or simply showing up with a kind word and a warm smile, he left an indelible mark on everyone he met. His strength, humility, and unwavering dedication will be remembered always. Albert Cavazos was a warrior, a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a friend to many. His presence was a blessing, and his memory will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. We take comfort in knowing that he is now reunited with his beloved Maria Rosa, dancing once again under heaven’s stars. Visitation will be held Monday, July 21, 2025 from 3:00 PM to 9:00 PM at the Rudy Garza Funeral Home and a rosary will begin at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 22, 2025 departing the Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 9:30 AM for a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Harlingen. Graveside services will take place at 1:00 PM at the RGV Veteran's State Cemetery at 2520 Inspiration Road in Mission, Texas under the auspices of the American Legion Post #205 and Sam Houston Honor Guard. Honored to serve as pallbearers will be his son in law, Jose (Paco) Bedartes, his sons, Albert Michael Cavazos and Adrian Cavazos. Along with his grandsons Xavier Jeremy Cavazos, Kaiden Joseph Bedartes, and Adrian James Cavazos. The Soldier Stood and Faced God The soldier stood and faced God, which must always come to pass. He hoped his shoes were shining, just as brightly as his brass. “Step forward now, you soldier, how shall I deal with you? Have you always turned the other cheek? To My Church have you been true?” The soldier squared his shoulders and said, “No, Lord, I guess I haven't, because those of us who carry guns, can’t always be a saint. I’ve had to work most Sundays, and at times my talk was tough. And sometimes I’ve been violent, because the world is awfully rough. But I never took a penny, that wasn’t mine to keep… Though I worked a lot of overtime, when the bills got just too steep. And I never passed a cry for help, though at times I shook with fear. And sometimes, God, forgive me, I’ve wept unmanly tears. I know I don’t deserve a place, among the people here. They never wanted me around, except to calm their fears. If you’ve a place for me here, Lord, it needn’t be so grand. I never expected or had too much, but if you don’t, I’ll understand.” There was a silence all around the throne, where the saints had often trod. As the soldier waited quietly for the judgment of his God. “Step forward now, you soldier, you've borne your burdens well.
