David Gatica Vazquez

La Feria – David Gatica Vazquez, 94, a lifetime resident of La Feria, passed away at his home on Wednesday, September 25, 2024. He was born in Villa de La Paz, San Luis Potosi, Mexico on January 14, 1930 to David Vazquez and Leonor Gatica. He arrived in La Feria in his early teens and worked odd jobs in the local agricultural industry of the day. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1955 and served a tour of duty during the Korean Conflict as a tank gunner with the 50th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battalion. He was honorably discharged in 1957. He forever spoke of his time in the military as the most rewarding and proudest moment of his life. He settled in La Feria to raise his family and over the years built a reputation as a do it-all, self-employed handyman who many referred to as the hardest working man they had ever met. He always enjoyed a good conversation with anyone, even if all you did was listen. He attended thousands of basketball, volleyball, baseball and football games through the years to support his children and grandchildren. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of hard work and love of family will forever be cherished. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Virginia Vazquez; his children, Laura (Oren) Trevino, Damian (Steffani) Vazquez, Javier (Sarah) Vazquez, Jaime (Ruby) Vazquez, and David (Melinda) Rodriguez; 16 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren; his nephew Ruben Barragan of Matehuala, San Luis Potosi and numerous grandnieces and grandnephews. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 1, 2024 at Rudy Garza Funeral Home Palms Chapel in La Feria with a rosary to be recited at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 2, 2024 departing the Rudy Garza Palms Chapel in La Feria at 9:15 a.m. for a 10:00 a.m. Mass of Christian burial at St. Theresa Catholic Church in San Benito. Interment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Park in La Feria, Texas. Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Matthew Rodriguez, James Vazquez, Michael Vazquez, Diego Trevino, Dimas Trevino and Julian Trevino. Honorary pallbearers are Aaron Trevino and Joaquin Trevinio. The Vazquez Family would like to express a special thanks to Mr. Jorge Zayas and Mr. Armando Lopez of Freedom Home Health as well as the staff of the Veterans Administration Clinic in Harlingen for their care and service.
