Maria Elena Zamora

Maria Elena Zamora, 79, of Santa Maria, Texas, entered into eternal rest on Sunday, August 30, 2026. She was born on February 2, 1947, in San Benito, Texas, to Valentin and Juanita Rangel. Maria Elena was a strong, independent, and determined woman whose life was marked by hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering devotion to her family. As a single mother, she proudly raised her three daughters, teaching them by example the importance of strength, self-reliance, and never being afraid of a challenge. There was very little Maria Elena could not do. Whether she was working on her car, fixing a plumbing problem, or tackling a project around the house, she had a remarkable ability to figure things out for herself. Nothing seemed too difficult for her, and she approached life with confidence, determination, and a willingness to get the job done. Her professional life was just as remarkable. Maria Elena worked as a welder at the Port of Brownsville and later operated heavy equipment for the City of Los Fresnos. Determined to continue growing and create a new path for herself, she went on to college, earned her bachelor’s degree, and became a Registered Nurse. Maria Elena spent many years caring for patients at Valley Baptist Medical Center, where she worked in the Progressive Coronary Care Unit (PCCU). Following her years at Valley Baptist, she continued her nursing career with a home health agency until her retirement. Her journey from welding and operating heavy equipment to earning a college degree and becoming a nurse was a true reflection of the woman she was—fearless, capable, hardworking, and determined to accomplish whatever she set her mind to. In 2005, Maria Elena met the love of her life, Pedro, affectionately known as “Mr. Pete.” They later married and shared a beautiful life together. Mr. Pete treated Maria Elena like a queen, lovingly caring for her and remaining by her side until his passing. Their years together brought her great happiness, love, and companionship. Maria Elena enjoyed gardening, karaoke, and spending time with her friends. Above all, she treasured the people she loved and the life she had worked so hard to build. She will be remembered for her strength and independence, her determination, her many accomplishments, and the love she had for her family. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Leticia Hernandez, Cynthia (John) Benavides, and Rebeka (Rick) Avendano; grandchildren, Amanda Benavides, John Patric Benavides, April Arispe, Renee Avendano, Rylee Avendano, and Cassandra (Robert) Espino; great-grandchildren, Ovidio “JJ” Silva, Cheyenne Silva, Maddisyn Silva, Arabella Benavides, Victoria Benavides, Kataleena Benavides, Theodore Benavides, Ethan Gonzalez, Robert Espino, Julian Espino, and Alessandra Espino; and her sister, Velma (Manuel) Mercado. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Pedro “Mr. Pete” Zamora; her parents, Valentin and Juanita Rangel; and her five siblings, Elisa Cavazos, Lile Ramirez, Valentin Rangel, Jr., Ruben Rangel, and Delia Rodriguez. Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 2, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Rudy Garza Funeral Home in La Feria. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 3, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the Rudy Garza Palm Chapel in La Feria. Interment will follow at Heavenly Grace Memorial Park. Maria Elena lived her life with courage, strength, and determination. From raising three daughters on her own, to mastering trades few women of her generation pursued, to earning her degree and dedicating many years to caring for others as a nurse, she showed that no challenge was too great when met with hard work and perseverance. Her strength and example will live on through the generations of the family she leaves behind.
