Nieves G. Gonzalez, 84, entered into rest on September 14, 2026, in Harlingen, Texas. Nieves was a humble, loving, and hardworking man who found his greatest joy in spending time with his family. Throughout his life, he worked diligently in aquaculture, shrimping, and agriculture. He especially enjoyed working on his farm, where he found great satisfaction in caring for the land and staying close to the work he loved. In his quieter moments, Nieves enjoyed watching his favorite television shows, especially El Chavo, and listening to the music of his favorite musician, Vicente Fernández. Nieves was a devoted father and grandfather who loved his family deeply. His love for them was evident in the time he shared with them and in the memories they created together. He will be remembered for his humble nature, strong work ethic, and the love he had for his family. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his children, Maria Josie Reyna (Pablo) of Harlingen, Melissa Smith (Thomas) of San Benito, Antonio Zavala (Shannon) of Arizona, Adrian Gonzalez of Harlingen, Mireya Nino (Joel) of Los Fresnos, and Jose Nieves Gonzalez (Anilu) of Harlingen. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Jessica Reyna, Geneva Smith, Davianalee Zavala, Emily Reyna, Vera Zavala, Jose Guillermo Zavala, Juan Zavala, Joshua Reyna, Rebecca Leann Gonzales, Adrian Gonzales, Gewlisa Smith, Marko Gonzalez, Marlene Nino, and Leonardo Gonzales, as well as 15 great-grandchildren. Also surviving him are his three siblings, Guadalupe Zavala, Gabino Gonzalez, and Maria Cruz. Nieves was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Virginia Tamez Gonzalez; his parents, Nieves and Leonardo Gonzalez; and six siblings, Gabriel Gonzalez, Rufino Gonzalez, Manuel Gonzalez, Lucinda Gomez, Elena Cruz, and Virginia Aguilar. Visitation will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m., with a Rosary at 7:00 p.m., at the Rudy Garza Chapel of Peace in Harlingen, Texas. The funeral service will be held on Monday, September 21, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home chapel, with Brother Hoss Alvarez officiating. Interment will follow at Mont Meta Memorial Park Cemetery in San Benito, Texas. Pallbearers will be Antonio Zavala, Adrian Gonzales, Jose N. Gonzales, Joshua Reyna, Marko Gonzalez, and Primitivo Zavala. Honorary pallbearers will be Pablo Reyna, Thomas Smith, Joel A. Nino, and Leonardo Gonzales. Nieves leaves behind a lasting legacy of love, hard work, and devotion to his family. The memories he created and the love he shared will remain in the hearts of his family and loved ones for years to come. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home in Harlingen, Texas.
