Roberto C. Hernandez

Mr. Roberto Cruz Hernández was born and raised in Acambaro, Guanajuato, Mexico. He was born on on July 28, 1933 to Baltazar Hernandez and Socorro Cruz. He passed away Saturday, December 7, 2024 at the age of 91. Born and raised on a ranch, he understood the freedoms and responsibilities of farm and ranch life. As an adolescent, he spread his wings to come to the United States to find a better life. He traveled the U.S., but he eventually came to settle down in Harlingen to raise a family and take the opportunity of a lifetime to work at the formerly named Texas State Technical Institute, which is now a prominent college. In the little spare time that he had, Mr. Hernández indulged in farming his little plot of land. His strong work ethic included passing along the love and pride of working hard to grow and enjoy the fruits of one’s labor. After retiring from TSTC in 1996, Mr. Hernández enjoyed traveling and visiting relatives and other extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents, Baltazar Hernandez and Socorro Cruz; his wife and mother of his children, Ofelia Carter Hernandez; his daughter, Sylvia Ledezma; his beloved aunt, Ester Hernandez and numerous brothers and sisters. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife, San Juanita Hernandez; 4 daughters, Laura Meehan (Patrick W.), Sonia Dennany (James E.), Norma Brown (Robert), Annabelle Geer (Michael) and his son, Robert A. Hernandez (Maria G.); 4 step-daughters, Norma, Elma, Sylvia and Nora; 8 grandchildren, Katarina Olivarez Grice, Sara Olivarez Roller, Sonia Emily Gleason, Nathaniel Brown, Silvie Geer, Richard Andrew Hernandez, Rebecca Annette Hernandez and Raymond Abram Hernandez; he is also survived by 4 great-grandchildren, Evan, Everett, Ethan and Eugene Gleason and 3 siblings, Federico Hernandez, Angela Hernandez and Elva Hernandez. Visitation will begin Wednesday, December 11, 2024 from 2:00 PM until 9:00 PM and a rosary will be prayed at 7:00 PM. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 12, 2024 departing the Rudy Garza Funeral Home at 9:30 AM for a 10:00 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Anthony Catholic Church and burial will follow at Ashland Memorial Park Cemetery. Honored to serve as pallbearers are: Robert A. Hernandez, Richard A. Hernandez, Rebecca A. Hernandez, Raymond A. Hernandez, Laura O. Meehan and Patrick W. Meehan. Funeral services are under the direction of Rudy Garza Funeral Home of Harlingen.
